Since October 1999 I like to visit the official website formula1.com for its live timing function of every Formula 1 race. Now all the important information will be available during a Formula 1 race as a free App for the iPhone. Now, during the TV broadcast our television-Couch is no longer heated by my 18 inch laptop.

The search word “formula1” in the iPhone App Store leads to the download of the “Must Have” app for all Formula 1 – Fans. It requires only the free registration at formula1.com to enjoy all the major Formula 1 – details on the iPhone to come in.

The information range is comprehensive: in addition to the live timing all data of the track, actual weather and maximum speeds are available.

Red number: Car entered the pit
Green sector point: Personal best time
Purple sector point: Absolute best time

In the top menu tab “Sector” you can switch to the times of the track sectors.

The lower right “Commentary” tab displays the latest reports of the race standings.

The track status shows yellow flags and the use of the Safety Car.

Additional information during the race (Track Data)

In addition to all the relevant track data you also get interesting graphics of the weather situation at the race location and the maximum speed of each driver on the track.

Tips before recording your first practice session recording

Runkeeper starts only when GPS data are received. Therefore open the app a few minutes before beginning with your practice. Only when the GPS light is green, the program starts recording.

If you want to hear music during the practice session, after successfully receiving GPS data, start the iPod-App with your desired MP3 playback and then start again RunKeeper to begin the training recording by touching “Start Activity”. In order to save power, you can switch to stand-by mode. Never use the “Home-Button”, because then Runkeeper is terminated prematurely.

After the end of practice, the tracked data are stored in the iPhone and can be uploaded on runkeeper.com. Older recordings are found under “Activities”.

By scrolling the touch screen to the left, you will get the view to the Google map with the tracked course. From the website runkeeper.com the recorded GPS data can be download in multiple formats.

Additional features in the paid version of RunKeeper:

At adjustable intervals during your workout you get acoustically the distance and speed values. Ideal for sports, where the iPhone can not be hold in view constantly.

In addition, you can create your own practice announcements in configurable time intervals, which can be heard during the practice as well.

Conclusion: Highly recommended iPhone App for athletes, who practice their endurance. Recording trips longer than three hours will need the use of an additional battery.

To type in a phone number requires full concentration on the screen. Gone are the days when you wrote a complete SMS with the mobile phone in your pocket. Is this a step back in development?

Years ago the problem has been solved perfectly with Windows Mobile: Thanks to the extra-fee “Voice Command” add-on, speech was converted to the wanted dial-ups without necessary training even at normal environmental sounds. This feature is also included in the software “BlueMe” in cars from Fiat and Alfa Romeo. There it can be activated with a switch on the steering wheel.

Both iPhone and G1 only come out with some announcements of these opportunities, but they are not implemented so far. So you still need the targeted pressure on the touchscreen surface for dialing.

Contact lists are no big help with these phones. For comfortable scrolling and searching through the name list, both hands are required, especially if you have short thumbs.

No less difficult is the search for a stored contact. On G1 the search is hidden behind the menu button. With the iPhone you have to close the application “Phone” (green phone icon) and to open the “Contacts”. There a finger-tap into the search box opens the letter makes to enter the search. At least the small keyboard surface in vertical mode forces you to stop walking for finding the searched contact number.
